Curtains, please!

So after much duress I have finally decided to get myself a blog. Previously I always though bloggers were pretentious people who felt they were their own journalists and free agents, and who thought their opinions mattered, when in fact, they mostly did not. Now, a dear friend of mine introduced me to the blogging community, and after reading hers for some time now, I thought I’d give it a shot. And already, it’s killing me having to use correct grammar and capital letters, unlike msn or facebook.

So who am I? My name, as you guessed, is Alex. I’m not going to use an alias or anything (Hi, Abby Lee), because frankly their is no reason to. With bloggers getting ousted every five minutes, I figured I might as well not bother. I am twenty and am at university in Cardiff. While not being a city boy, I do love Cardiff. Being a capital city, it has many perks; namely that things actually happen here, but in a contrast to London, where everything is a rush and is polluted, Cardiff is relaxed and small. It is tiny of a city, and smaller than many in England. It is also cheap, and for a student who has very little money, this works out just fine. Other things you should know about me include the fact that I am obsessed over music. Literally, if there is music on, I will be thinking it through, for example when on nights out, everyone else is bopping away, I’m doing the same, but trying to work out what drum patterns are being used, and what effects are being used.

One more reason for starting this blog, aside from boredom and peer pressure (Hi Tania, I finally did it) is that I love writing. I have a moleskin diary that has been with me twice around the world, is falling apart and covered in stickers that I write in whenever possible, but normally this boils down to poems or scraps of rubbish that makes no sense. Much like this ramble right here. I like to blame this style of writing on Jack Kerouac, due to his spontaneous style, but the difference was that he was actually saying something, while I just confuse people. I am also a fan of Hunter S Thompson. He is simply one of the most interesting writers in the last century, and not just because of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, although this is his best book. There is a sense of anger and opinion in everything he writes; he did his own thing. He is quoted as having said “some people say it is wrong to use words such as scum and rotten are wrong for objective journalism, which is true, but they miss the point”, basically saying he knows he is not writing objective journalism, but is writing his own anger on paper. James Frey is another one; “America’s most notorious author”, who is not only one of the most controversial authors of recent years, but one of the best. He writes books that will last forever; one of the few authors who actually write anything of substance, that you can pick apart and have more than one layer. The same is true of Alex Garland, who captures the adventure of travelling in his book, The Beach.

As you can tell, I could go on for hours about writing and music, but for now I am going to leave it. Until next time, I bid you adieu
